A rare association of plasmacytoma and thymoma is described in a 44-year-old man. The former had been present for 12 years, was localized in the left neck, and had not increased in size. Histologically, the plasmacytoma showed plasma cell proliferation in the light-chain-immunopositive stromal tissue of the tumor. The thymic tumor demonstrated increased cellularity with sheets of epithelial cells. The plasmacytoma and thymic tumor cells were both positive for the light-chain immunoglobulin, but negative for the heavy-chain immunoglobulin, which distinguishes them from lymphomas. Electron microscopic examination revealed the tumor cells of the thymus to be neuroendocrine in origin. The combination of plasmacytoma and thymic tumor is rare, and the possible occurrence of a metastatic process from the plasmacytoma to the thymus is discussed.
